Wooden Beds with Headboards

Our wooden beds with headboards combine solid timber construction with a headboard designed as part of the bed frame itself. Made to order in our North Yorkshire workshop, the collection includes standard and low-height beds, practical ottoman storage frames, four poster designs and distinctive live edge oak beds.

Each wooden bed frame with headboard is made from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak, with six standard UK sizes and a choice of finishes available. Whether you want a simple wooden bed for an everyday bedroom or a larger frame that becomes more of a feature, there are different designs to suit the space you're working with.

A solid wooden headboard also has a practical role. It provides a substantial backrest when sitting up in bed, helps keep pillows in place and creates a barrier between the bed and the wall. Every bed is made from solid timber and backed by our 12-year guarantee.

Why Choose a Wooden Bed with a Headboard?

For many people, the choice between a bed with or without a headboard comes down to how the bed will be used and how you want it to sit within the room. A solid timber headboard gives you something substantial behind your pillows when sitting up to read, watch television or relax. It can also help prevent pillows from slipping into the gap behind the mattress and reduce direct contact between your pillows and the wall.

There is a design benefit too. The headboard gives the timber a larger presence within the room, providing more space for the natural grain and character of the oak or pine to be seen. Your choice of timber, finish and headboard design can therefore make quite a difference to the overall appearance of the bed.

Beds With vs Without Headboards

Both designs have their place, and the best option often depends on the room itself. A bed with a headboard could be the better fit if:

  • You regularly sit up or read in bed
  • You want a solid surface behind your pillows
  • You prefer the bed to have more presence within the room
  • You have enough wall height to accommodate the headboard
  • You want the grain and finish of the timber to form a bigger part of the design

A headboard-free frame can be more practical when you're working with a window behind the bed, a sloping ceiling or limited wall height. It can also suit bedrooms where you simply want to keep the furniture lower and more understated. Our platform beds are designed without headboards and include both conventional and low-profile options.

Different Types of Wooden Beds with Headboards

There isn't one standard design across the collection. Our beds with headboards include different frame heights, storage options and styles, allowing you to choose according to both the room and how you intend to use the bed.

Standard Height Beds with Headboards

For a more conventional bed height, our standard height beds include solid timber designs with integrated headboards. These provide a familiar bed-frame profile while giving you the choice of different timbers, finishes and frame designs.

Low Beds with Headboards

Choosing a lower frame doesn't mean you have to go without a headboard. Selected low wooden beds combine a lower base with a solid timber headboard, keeping more of the bed closer to the floor while retaining a defined back to the frame. This can work particularly well where you want a lower bed but still prefer the appearance and practicality of a headboard.

Ottoman Beds with Headboards

If storage is important, our ottoman storage beds combine a wooden headboard with concealed storage beneath the mattress. This gives you additional storage within the footprint of the bed itself, without having to switch to a headboard-free design.

Four Poster Beds

Our four poster beds offer a very different take on a wooden bed with a headboard. The headboard forms part of a taller frame with four corner posts, giving the bed considerably more presence within the room. They're best suited to bedrooms with enough floor space and ceiling height to accommodate the larger proportions of the frame comfortably.

Live Edge Oak Beds

For a headboard that puts the natural character of the timber at the centre of the design, our live edge oak bed frames retain the natural contours of the European oak. Rather than creating a completely uniform edge, the individual shape, grain and variation of the timber remain visible across the headboard. The result is a solid oak bed where the natural character of the wood becomes one of its defining features.

Choosing Your Solid Wood Bed Frame

Every wooden bed with a headboard in the collection is made from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak. Both give you a substantial solid timber frame, but the appearance and character of the finished bed will differ depending on the wood you choose.

Our solid pine bed frames showcase the natural grain and warmth of Scandinavian pine, while our oak bed frames use European oak with its distinctive grain and natural variation. On a bed with a larger wooden headboard, these characteristics become an even more noticeable part of the finished design.

Your chosen timber can then be paired with one of our standard finishes, including unfinished, white, light, medium, walnut and black. Premium Rubio Monocoat finishes are also available for oak beds if you want to bring out the natural character of the timber in a different way.

Wooden Bed Frames with Headboards in Six Sizes

Our beds with headboards are available across six standard UK mattress sizes:

  • Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
  • Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
  • Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
  • Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
  • Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)

As well as checking the mattress size, look at the full external dimensions of your chosen frame before ordering. Headboard height is particularly important if the bed will sit beneath a window, sloping ceiling, shelving or other features on the wall behind it.

Choosing the Right Headboard for Your Space

As the headboard forms part of the bed frame, its dimensions are worth considering alongside the overall size of the bed. A taller or more substantial headboard can make the bed a stronger feature in the room, while a lower design may be better suited to bedrooms where wall height is limited.

If one of our standard designs doesn't quite work for your space, we can also discuss bespoke headboard and footboard requirements. This could include adapting dimensions to work around the room or creating a bed to suit a non-standard mattress size. Our beds with headboards are made to order in our North Yorkshire workshop, so speak to our team if you have something particular in mind.
