What Is an Ottoman Storage Bed?

An ottoman bed is a wooden bed with storage built directly into the frame beneath the mattress. Instead of relying on separate storage boxes or drawers, the mattress and slatted base lift to reveal the compartment underneath.

The base is supported by gas-powered struts, which assist with lifting and lowering the mattress platform. Once closed, the storage is completely concealed within the frame, so the bed retains the appearance of a solid wooden bed.

This design also means you don't need additional clearance alongside the frame to pull out drawers, which can be particularly useful where bedside tables, walls or other furniture sit close to the bed.

How Much Storage Does an Ottoman Bed Give You?

One of the main advantages of an ottoman bed frame is the amount of usable storage it creates beneath the mattress. Our standard ottoman beds provide around 22cm of underbed storage, making use of the cavity within the bed frame itself. That gives you a useful place to keep items that would otherwise take up wardrobe, cupboard or floor space, including:

• Spare duvets, pillows and bedding
• Towels and linen
• Seasonal clothing
• Suitcases and travel bags
• Other belongings you want stored out of sight

Because access is from above, you can make use of the storage without needing space at either side of the bed for drawers to open.

Benefits of a Wooden Ottoman Bed

The biggest benefit of an ottoman bed is straightforward: you gain useful storage without increasing the footprint of the bed. This can make a real difference in bedrooms where adding another chest of drawers or storage unit isn't practical.

Storage is also kept neatly out of sight. Once the mattress base is lowered, everything underneath is concealed within the solid timber frame, allowing the bed to provide storage without changing how the rest of the room looks.

The gas strut mechanism assists with raising the mattress platform when you need access, so you don't have to lift the full weight of the mattress and slatted base without support.

An ottoman bed with a headboard combines concealed storage with a solid timber headboard built into the frame. The headboard provides a substantial backrest when sitting up in bed, helps keep pillows in place and gives the bed more presence within the room. Ottoman Bed Without a Headboard

Our headboard-free ottoman beds provide the same principle of concealed storage with a simpler overall frame. Without the additional headboard height, they're particularly useful where the bed needs to sit beneath a window or where you want to keep the furniture relatively understated. Increased-Height Ottoman Beds

If maximising the storage beneath your bed is particularly important, our increased-height ottoman designs raise the frame to create a deeper storage compartment. Both headboard and headboard-free increased-height models are available, allowing you to prioritise additional storage without being restricted to one particular bed style.

Using Your Ottoman Bed Safely

Our ottoman beds use a gas strut lifting mechanism to assist with raising and lowering the mattress base. As with any moving mechanism, it’s important to operate the bed from the intended lifting point and keep hands and feet clear as the base is being opened or closed.

Children and pets should be kept away from the lifting mechanism while it is in use, and the base should always be raised and lowered carefully. Each ottoman bed is checked before leaving our workshop as part of our quality control process.

Solid Oak or Pine Ottoman Beds

Our solid wood ottoman beds are available in Scandinavian pine or European oak, giving you two quite different timber options for the frame. Our solid pine bed frames showcase the natural warmth and grain of Scandinavian pine, while our oak bed frames use solid European oak with its distinctive grain and natural variation.

You can then choose from unfinished, white, light, medium, walnut and black finishes. Our Premium Rubio Monocoat  finishes are also available for oak beds if you want a different finish while retaining the natural character of the timber.

Our wooden ottoman beds are available in six standard UK mattress sizes:

• Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
• Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
• Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
• King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
• Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
• Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)
