Small Double Wooden Beds

A small double gives you more room than a single without taking up quite as much bedroom space as a standard double. Measuring 120 x 190cm (4'0" x 6'3"), it's a particularly useful size for smaller bedrooms, teenagers, guest rooms and solo sleepers who want a little more room.

Why Choose a Small Double Bed?

Sometimes known as a 4ft bed, the small double occupies a useful middle ground between two of the most familiar UK bed sizes.

You gain 30cm of mattress width compared with a single, which can make a noticeable difference for one person. At the same time, a small double is 15cm narrower than a standard double, potentially freeing up valuable space elsewhere in a smaller bedroom. That makes this size worth considering when you want to balance sleeping space with the rest of the room.

It can work particularly well for a teenager moving into a larger bed, an adult sleeping alone who wants more space than a single, or a guest room where a full double would leave the rest of the bedroom feeling restricted.

Two people can also sleep in a small double, although the 120cm width gives each person less individual space than a standard double, king or larger bed.

Small Double, Single or Double?

All three of these UK bed sizes use a 190cm long mattress, so the main difference is width:

Those measurements can be particularly useful when you're working with a tighter bedroom.

For example, if a standard double leaves too little clearance beside a wardrobe or makes the route around the bed feel restricted, saving 15cm with a small double could make the layout work better. Equally, moving up from a single gives you an additional 30cm of mattress width without increasing the length.

Oak or Pine for Your Small Double Bed?

Size isn't your only decision. Our small double beds are available in solid European oak and Scandinavian pine, giving you two quite different starting points for the finished bed.

An oak bed brings distinctive natural grain and variation to the room. It's a denser, heavier timber and works particularly well when you want the wooden frame itself to become a more noticeable part of the bedroom.

A solid pine bed has a lighter natural appearance and is a more affordable route into a solid timber bed. Pine also works particularly well with different stains, so the finished appearance can range from light and natural to much darker tones. Neither choice restricts you to a particular bedroom style. Both timbers are available with our range of finishes, so your small double can be kept natural or given a completely different character.
