What Is a Standard Bed Height?

There is no single standard bed height used by every manufacturer, so it's important to check the measurements of the particular frame you're considering.

At The Wooden Bed Company, our standard height frames have a footboard height of around 40cm. This is the height of the bed frame itself, rather than the finished sleeping height. Your mattress sits above the slats, so its depth will also need to be taken into account when working out how high the top of your bed will be from the floor.

If bed height is particularly important to you, measure your existing bed and mattress as a useful comparison before choosing your new frame.

Why Choose a Standard Height Bed?

Standard height beds are a good option if you prefer a conventional bed height rather than the deliberately lower profile of a platform or low bed.

The additional clearance beneath the frame can also be useful for storage. Depending on the design you choose, this could mean adding matching under-bed drawers, using the available space independently or opting for an ottoman storage bed with storage built into the frame itself.

A standard-height design also gives you plenty of choice within our range. Alongside our classic wooden beds, the collection includes four poster frames, trundle beds, live-edge oak designs and options both with and without headboards.

Standard Height Beds vs Low Beds

The main difference is straightforward: our standard height bed frames sit at around 40cm, while our low frames sit at around 20cm before the mattress is taken into account.

A standard height frame gives you a higher sleeping position and more clearance beneath the bed. A lower frame sits closer to the floor, reducing the overall height of the bed and creating a lower profile within the room.

Neither height is automatically the right choice for everyone. Your own height, mattress depth, room proportions and how easily you find it to get in and out of bed are all worth considering.

Standard Height Bed Styles

Our standard height collection includes several different designs, so choosing a conventional frame height doesn't mean being limited to one style of bed.

For a straightforward solid timber frame, our classic designs are available with different leg and headboard options. If storage is a priority, our wooden ottoman beds provide concealed storage beneath the mattress, while our trundle bed incorporates an additional single bed underneath the main frame.

Standard Height Bed Sizes

Our standard height beds are available across six UK bed sizes, giving you the same 40cm frame height whether you're furnishing a smaller bedroom or looking for a much larger bed.

• Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
• Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
• Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
• King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
• Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
• Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)

Remember to allow for the external dimensions of the frame as well as the mattress size when measuring your room. If one of the standard sizes isn't quite right, we can also manufacture a bespoke wooden bed to your required dimensions.

Solid Oak, Pine and Your Choice of Finish

Our standard height bed frames are made to order from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak. Pine provides a more accessible solid timber option, while oak has a distinctive grain and natural variation that makes the timber a more prominent feature of the finished bed.

A selection of finishes is also available to change the tone of the timber while allowing its natural character to remain visible. Options range from unfinished and light finishes through to medium, walnut and black. Premium Rubio Monocoat finishes are also available for oak beds at an additional cost.

Colour samples can be ordered before you commit to a finish, helping you compare your preferred option with flooring, furniture and other wood tones already in the room.

Handmade to Order in North Yorkshire

Every standard height bed is manufactured and finished in our own North Yorkshire workshop. Our team works with solid timber using traditional woodworking principles alongside modern precision machinery, with each frame made to order rather than bought in as a finished product.

This also gives us the flexibility to help when a standard specification doesn't quite work. Bespoke dimensions, finishes and features such as headboards, footboards and storage can all be discussed with our team.
