What Do You Gain by Moving Up to a King?

A king isn't simply a wider double, the mattress also becomes longer. A standard double measures 135 x 190cm, while a king measures 150 x 200cm and moving up gives you an additional 15cm of width and 10cm of length. That extra length is particularly worth considering for taller sleepers, while the additional width gives two people more individual mattress space when sharing.

Of course, the bed still needs to work with the rest of the bedroom. A king takes up more floor space than a double bed, so think about the complete layout rather than the mattress in isolation. Check that you'll still be able to comfortably use wardrobes and drawers and move around the bed once the frame is in place.

Make the Most of a Larger Bed

A king has enough scale to become an important part of the bedroom, which gives you plenty of choice over how prominent you want the frame to be. For a clean, understated look, a platform bed keeps the design relatively simple and allows the timber to do much of the work. A low wooden bed can also reduce the visual height of a larger frame.

If you have the room to make more of the bed itself, consider a design with a headboard, a characterful live edge oak bed or a four poster bed. Storage can be incorporated into the design too. An ottoman bed uses the area beneath the mattress for concealed storage, while compatible standard-height beds can be paired with wooden under-bed drawers.

A larger wooden frame naturally puts more timber on display, so your choice of material and finish can have a noticeable influence on the room. Choose an oak bed if you like the distinctive grain and natural variation of solid European oak. Scandinavian pine beds have a lighter natural appearance and provide a more affordable solid timber alternative.
