Platform Beds
Simple in design and made from solid timber, our platform beds offer a clean, headboard-free alternative to a more traditional bed frame. Their understated shape works particularly well in contemporary bedrooms, loft conversions and rooms where a tall headboard could compete with windows, sloping ceilings or other features.
Our collection includes classic wooden platform beds alongside lower-profile designs, ottoman storage beds and our distinctive Japanese-style bed. Each frame is made to order in our North Yorkshire workshop from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak, with a choice of sizes and finishes available.
Whether you prefer a conventional frame height or want your bed much closer to the floor, a wooden platform bed keeps the design simple and lets the natural timber do much of the talking. Every frame is manufactured and finished in-house and backed by our 12-year guarantee.

What Is a Platform Bed?
A platform bed supports the mattress directly on the bed frame without requiring an additional bed base. Our platform bed frames use solid timber slats to support the mattress, with a headboard-free design that gives the bed its simple, uncluttered shape.
Platform beds are often associated with lower frames, but they don't all sit at the same height. Our collection includes both standard-height and low bed frames, so you can choose the sleeping height that works for you.
A platform bed could be worth considering if:
- You want a simple bed frame without a headboard
- Your bed needs to sit beneath a window or sloping ceiling
- You prefer a lower or less visually dominant bed
- You want the option of a particularly low Japanese-style design
- You need built-in storage without adding a large headboard
Which Platform Bed Suits Your Space?
The platform range isn't limited to one design. The main difference comes down to how low you want the bed to sit and whether storage is important.
Keep Things Simple
Our classic solid wood platform beds give you the stripped-back platform design at a more conventional height. With no headboard to accommodate, they're also easier to position against walls where windows, shelving or other features might otherwise get in the way.
Bring the Bed Closer to the Floor
A low platform bed reduces the height further, making it particularly useful in attic rooms, loft conversions and bedrooms with restricted ceiling height. It can also change the proportions of the room. Keeping a king, super king or emperor frame lower to the floor can make a larger bed feel less dominant within the available space.
Choose a Japanese-Style Platform Bed
Our Japanese-style bed is one of the lowest and most distinctive designs in the collection. Its solid timber platform sits close to the floor, while the recessed base creates a subtle floating appearance beneath the frame.
The result is a particularly simple design that works well where you want to keep furniture low and leave more open space above the bed.
Add Storage Beneath the Mattress
If storage matters, our ottoman storage beds include headboard-free platform options with concealed storage beneath the mattress.
This gives you the cleaner profile of a platform bed without losing valuable storage space, which can be particularly useful in bedrooms where there isn't room for additional furniture.
Platform Bed Sizes
Our platform beds are available across six standard UK sizes, from single frames for smaller bedrooms through to emperor beds where space allows:
- Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
- Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
- Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
- Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
- Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)
When measuring up, check the external dimensions of the individual frame as well as the mattress size. This is particularly important if your platform bed needs to sit beneath a window, between existing furniture or within a restricted loft space.
Solid Wood Platform Beds, Made to Order
Every wooden platform bed frame in the collection is made to order from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak. Our solid pine bed frames provide a more accessible route into a solid timber bed, while our oak bed frames showcase the distinctive grain and natural variation of European oak.
Your chosen timber can then be paired with a finish to suit the room, from unfinished light and white options through to medium, walnut and black. Premium Rubio Monocoat finishes are also available for oak platform beds.
Each frame is manufactured and finished in our North Yorkshire workshop rather than bought in as a completed bed. If the standard dimensions don't work for your mattress or available space, we can also discuss a bespoke wooden bed made to your requirements. All of our wooden bed frames are backed by a 12-year guarantee.
Platform Beds
FAQ's
What Is a Platform Bed?
A platform bed is a low-profile, solid-surface bed frame made without the need for a box spring. Platform wooden bed frames offer a minimalist design and strong mattress support in a single, compact structure.
Can I Use Any Mattress With a Platform Bed?
Our platform beds are compatible with all standard UK mattresses, regardless of their size or thickness. The slatted base design of a typical platform bed provides continuous support across the whole mattress, offering a firmer base to rest your head.
What Materials Are Your Platform Beds Made From?
Each of our platform beds are carefully produced from solid oak or pine, sustainably sourced and handcrafted in our UK workshop for long-lasting quality and elegance.
What are the benefits of a platform bed?
The simple construction of a platform bed makes it a practical choice if you want a headboard-free frame or need more flexibility when positioning your bed. Lower designs are particularly useful where ceiling height is restricted, while ottoman platform beds provide the option of built-in storage.
What is the difference between a platform bed and a low bed?
Platform describes the design of the bed, while low bed refers primarily to its height. Some platform beds sit particularly close to the floor, but not every platform bed has the same frame height. If height is your main consideration, explore our low height beds.
Are all platform beds low to the floor?
Platform beds can be made at different heights. Some of our designs have a more conventional frame height, while our low platform beds position the mattress much closer to the floor. Check the measurements of the individual bed if the finished sleeping height is important to you.
What is a Japanese-style platform bed?
Our Japanese-style platform bed is a particularly low solid timber design with a recessed base. This creates its distinctive floating appearance while keeping the overall bed close to the floor, making it a good option for rooms where you want to maintain a low furniture profile.
Do you need a special mattress for a platform bed?
A special mattress isn't required for our platform beds. Choose a standard UK mattress in the correct size for your frame and consider its depth if you want to keep the finished sleeping height particularly low.
Can a platform bed have storage?
Selected platform designs are available with built-in storage. Our ottoman storage beds include headboard-free options with concealed storage beneath the mattress, providing additional space without changing the simple platform design.
Are platform beds suitable for loft bedrooms?
A headboard-free platform bed can work particularly well in loft and attic bedrooms, where sloping ceilings often limit usable wall height. A low platform bed can reduce the overall height further if vertical space is particularly restricted.
Can you make a bespoke platform bed?
Our made-to-order approach gives us flexibility beyond the standard range. If you need non-standard dimensions or have particular requirements for the timber, finish or other features, speak to our team about creating a bespoke platform bed.
