Low Wooden Beds

Handmade from solid timber in our North Yorkshire workshop, our low bed frames sit closer to the floor for a lower, more understated profile. With a frame height of around 20cm, they're particularly well suited to loft bedrooms, rooms with sloping ceilings and spaces where you want to reduce the overall visual height of the bed.

Our collection of low wooden beds is made to order from solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak, with six standard sizes and a wide choice of finishes available. From simple low-profile frames to beds with headboards and platform designs, each is manufactured and finished in-house and backed by our 12-year guarantee.

Why Choose a Low Bed Frame?

The most obvious difference with a low bed is its height. By positioning the frame closer to the floor, there is more open space above the bed and less furniture occupying the vertical space within the room.

This can make a low profile bed particularly useful in loft conversions and attic bedrooms, where sloping ceilings can restrict where taller furniture can be positioned. They're also worth considering beneath lower windows or in smaller bedrooms where a taller frame or headboard could feel too dominant.

A lower frame can work particularly well with larger bed sizes too. If you have room for a king, super king or emperor but don't want the bed to visually overwhelm the space, reducing its height can help balance its proportions.

The sleeping position itself is another consideration. Some people simply prefer being closer to the floor, while others find a higher bed easier to get in and out of. Remember that your mattress sits above the frame, so its depth will also affect the final sleeping height.

Low Beds vs Standard Height Beds

Our low bed frames have a footboard height of around 20cm, compared with approximately 40cm for our standard height beds.

That difference changes both the appearance of the bed and how high the mattress sits within the room. A low frame creates a more streamlined profile and leaves more open space above the bed, while a standard height frame provides a more conventional sleeping position and greater clearance underneath.

Neither is automatically better. Room dimensions, mattress depth, storage requirements and your preferred sleeping height are all worth considering before choosing between the two.

Find the Right Low Wooden Bed

Our low beds are available in a range of designs, from straightforward solid timber frames to platform beds and options with headboards. This means you can choose a lower sleeping position without being restricted to one particular style.

For an even more distinctive low-profile design, our Japanese-style wooden bed takes inspiration from the simple proportions of traditional Japanese beds. The frame sits close to the floor, with a recessed base that creates a subtle floating effect beneath the solid timber platform. It's a particularly good choice for loft bedrooms, lower ceilings or spaces where you want to keep the bed visually understated.

Every frame is made from either solid Scandinavian pine or solid European oak. Pine provides a more accessible solid timber option with plenty of choice when it comes to finishes, while oak brings its own distinctive grain, colour variation and natural character.

You can also choose from six standard UK sizes:

  • Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
  • Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
  • Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
  • Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
  • Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)

Low Wooden Beds
FAQ's

How low is a low bed frame?

Our low bed frames have a footboard height of approximately 20cm, compared with around 40cm for our standard height frames. The mattress sits above this, so remember to include its depth when calculating the finished sleeping height.

What is a low profile bed?

A low profile bed is designed to sit closer to the floor than a conventional bed frame. The term generally describes the overall height and appearance of the bed rather than one particular construction or style. Our low wooden bed frames sit at approximately 20cm at the footboard before the mattress is added.

What is the difference between a low bed and a low profile bed?

The terms are often used to describe the same general type of bed: a frame with a deliberately lower height. "Low profile" tends to describe the appearance of the bed, while "low bed" is the broader term. Individual measurements can vary between manufacturers, so it's always worth checking the frame height.

What is the difference between a low bed and a platform bed?

Low bed refers primarily to the height of the frame, whereas platform bed describes a particular bed design. A platform bed can therefore also be a low bed. Our platform beds have their own distinctive construction while sharing the lower profile many customers are looking for.

Are low beds good for rooms with low ceilings?

A low bed can be particularly useful in lofts, attic bedrooms and other rooms where ceiling height is restricted. Keeping the bed closer to the floor creates more clearance above it and can make it easier to position beneath sloping ceilings.

Do low beds make a bedroom look bigger?

Reducing the height of a large piece of furniture can leave more visible wall space and help the room feel more open. This can be particularly effective in smaller bedrooms or with larger king, super king and emperor frames. The overall effect will still depend on the size and layout of the room.

Does a low bed need a special mattress?

You don't need a special mattress simply because you've chosen a low bed frame. Choose a mattress in the correct size for your frame and consider its depth, as a particularly deep mattress will increase the overall sleeping height.

Are low beds harder to get in and out of?

This depends on the individual. Some people enjoy sleeping closer to the floor, while others find it easier to get on and off a higher bed. If this is an important consideration, compare the combined height of the frame and mattress with a bed you already find comfortable to use.

Are low beds good for children?

A lower bed frame can be a practical option for a child's bedroom because it positions the mattress closer to the floor. However, suitability will depend on the child's age, the depth of the mattress and the individual bed design. Our dedicated children's beds are a useful starting point when choosing a frame specifically for a younger sleeper.

Can you make a low bed to a bespoke size?

We can manufacture a low bed to non-standard dimensions if one of our regular sizes doesn't suit your mattress or available space. Other elements, including the finish and features such as headboards, footboards and storage, can also be discussed as part of a bespoke order.
