Wooden Double Beds

A double is one of the most versatile bed sizes for UK bedrooms. At 135 x 190cm (4'6" x 6'3"), it provides space for two people without the larger footprint of a king, while also giving solo sleepers considerably more room than a single or small double.

Our wooden double bed frames are handmade to order in Yorkshire from solid European oak or Scandinavian pine. Choose from simple platform and low designs, beds with headboards, ottoman storage beds, four posters and distinctive live edge oak frames, with six standard finishes available across the collection.

Is a Double Bed the Right Size for Your Bedroom?

For many bedrooms, a double provides a useful balance between mattress space and the amount of floor space the complete bed occupies. A standard double mattress is 15cm wider than a small double and 45cm wider than a single, while all three sizes remain 190cm long. That extra width makes the double a familiar option for couples, but it's equally worth considering if you sleep alone and simply prefer a more generous bed.

Where it differs more significantly from the next size up is length. A king bed increases the mattress to 150 x 200cm, giving you an additional 15cm of width and 10cm of length.

So if you're choosing between double and king, don't just ask whether the wider bed will fit. Your height, the available bedroom space and how much room you like when sleeping can all influence which feels like the more sensible size.

How the bed sizes compare:

Small Double - 120 x 190cm (15cm narrower)

Double - 135 x 190cm

King - 150 x 200cm (15cm wider and 10cm longer)

These are mattress measurements rather than the external dimensions of the frame. Check the measurements on your chosen bed before ordering, particularly if you're working around wardrobes, radiators, alcoves or limited walking space.

Our Bed & Mattress Size Guide has the dimensions for all six standard sizes if you're still deciding.

One Size, Plenty of Different Bed Styles

Choosing a double gives you access to our full wooden bed collection, so the next decision is really about how you want the bed to work within your room. For a simpler appearance, explore our platform beds and low wooden beds. If you'd like the bed to have more presence, there are designs with headboards, four poster beds and natural live edge oak beds.

Storage can be incorporated too. Our ottoman beds provide concealed storage beneath the mattress platform, while compatible standard-height frames can be paired with wooden under-bed drawers.

This means a double wooden bed can work very differently depending on the bedroom. It can be kept low and understated, become the main feature of the room or help you make better use of the space beneath the mattress.

Solid Oak or Pine Double Beds

Every double wooden bed is available in solid European oak or Scandinavian pine.

Oak is denser and heavier, with natural grain and variation that gives each frame its own character. Pine has a lighter natural appearance and offers a more affordable way to choose a solid timber bed. Both can be paired with our range of finishes, so you aren't tied to the natural colour of the timber. Choose from Unfinished, White, Light, Medium, Walnut and Black, with £1 colour samples available if you want to compare finishes with existing flooring or bedroom furniture. Premium Rubio Monocoat finishes are also available for oak.

If timber is one of the main decisions you're weighing up, our Oak vs Pine Bed Frames: Which Should You Choose? guide goes into the differences in more detail.

Double Wooden Beds Made to Order

Our double beds are made to order in our Yorkshire workshop rather than bought in as finished frames. We work with solid timber throughout, including solid wooden slats, with each bed backed by our 12-year structural guarantee.

That also means choosing a standard double doesn't mean settling for one standard-looking bed. You can select the design, timber and finish that suits your bedroom, with bespoke wooden beds available if a standard size doesn't quite work for your space or mattress. FAQ's

What Size Is A Double Wooden Bed?

A UK standard double bed measures 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”). This size makes them incredibly popular among solo sleepers and couples. That said, they aren’t the largest size on the market – for a step up in size, look to king size beds.

Is A Double Bed Suitable For Two Adults?

Double beds can comfortably sleep two adults. Compared to a small double, for example, where it might feel like too tight a squeeze, a double bed grants 75 cm each of width for two sleepers to sprawl out and relax.

Should I Choose A Double Bed Or A King Size Bed?

While a double bed is a popular option, there are larger beds available if you have the means. Doubles can be used by two adults, but a king takes this to another level, granting a further 15 cm of width over the double - albeit at the cost of more floor space being taken up by the bed itself.

Do Double Wooden Beds Come With Storage?

Many of our bed frame styles can be found in a double size, which includes storage-focused options like ottoman beds, as well as standard height beds that offer space beneath the frame for storage boxes.

What Styles Of Double Wooden Beds Are Available?

We offer a variety of double beds in our wooden bed range. From bold pieces like four poster beds and platform beds, to subdued, minimalist designs in our low bed range.

What Finishes Can I Choose For A Double Wooden Bed?

We have a choice of six different finishes to choose from across all of our beds, including our double range. These include raw, unfinished wood, as well as light or dark shades.

Are Double Beds Good For Guest Rooms?

For larger guest rooms, a double bed is an excellent choice. Compared to singles or small doubles, a double bed offers guests a much more luxurious rest, with plenty of room to spread out throughout the night.
