Solid Wooden Four Poster Beds
Four poster beds are defined by the tall posts rising from each corner of the frame, connected by an upper structure above the bed. It's a design with traditional roots, but simple proportions and natural timber give it plenty of relevance in modern bedrooms too.
Our four poster bed can be left open for a clean, understated appearance or dressed with curtains for a softer, more enclosed feel. Made entirely from solid timber, the frame has enough presence to become a focal point without relying on ornate detailing.
Is a Four Poster Bed Right for Your Bedroom?
The additional height of a four poster means there are a few extra measurements to consider before ordering. We recommend a minimum ceiling height of 220cm (7ft 3in).
It's also worth checking:
- The complete external dimensions of the frame
- Ceiling lights and other overhead fittings
- Sloping or unusually shaped ceilings
- Space around wardrobes, drawers and bedside furniture
A four poster can work in a smaller bedroom when the proportions are right. Just remember that the tall posts give the frame greater visual presence than a conventional wooden bed, even when the floor space required is similar.
Oak and Pine Four Poster Beds
Choose between solid European oak and Scandinavian pine for your four poster bed frame.
An oak four poster bed makes the natural grain and variation of European oak particularly noticeable across the tall posts and upper frame. Scandinavian pine has a lighter natural character and provides another genuine solid timber option at a more accessible price point.
Both can be finished in several different ways, so your choice doesn't have to be based on the natural colour of the timber alone. Our Oak vs Pine Bed Frames guide explores the differences in more detail.
Four Poster Bed Sizes and Storage
Our wooden four poster beds are available in six standard UK mattress sizes:
- Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
- Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
- Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
- Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
- Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)
These are mattress measurements, so always check the complete external dimensions of the frame when planning your space.
There is also approximately 25cm of clearance beneath the bed, giving you useful space for underbed storage. Matching wooden under-bed drawers can be purchased separately if you'd prefer a coordinated storage option.
Choose Your Four Poster Bed Finish
Our standard finishes include Unfinished, White, Light, Medium, Walnut and Black, giving you plenty of scope to coordinate your new bed with the rest of the bedroom.
Premium Rubio Monocoat finishes are also available for oak at an additional cost. If you're deciding between colours, our £1 finish samples make it easier to compare options alongside your existing flooring and furniture before ordering.
If you need something outside our standard options, our bespoke wooden bed service gives you greater flexibility over the dimensions, design and finish of your bed.
Made to Order in Solid Wood
Every wooden four poster bed frame is made to order from solid European oak or Scandinavian pine, complete with solid timber slats.
Precision-machined slot-together mortise and tenon joints create accurate connections between the substantial timber components, rather than relying on cheap clip-together hardware. Each bed is manufactured in-house and supplied with our 12-year guarantee.
If a four poster isn't quite right for your room, you can explore our platform beds, standard height beds and low wooden beds for alternative solid wood designs.

FAQ's

Do Four Poster Beds Fit In Modern Bedrooms?
Yes, our four-poster beds have a pared-back, modern design, making them suitable for both classic and contemporary spaces. You’ll just have to make sure your ceiling height is at least 220 cm (7 ft 3 in).

Our four-poster beds are available in six standard UK sizes - Single, Small Double, Double, King, Super King and Emperor, each of which pairs with their associated mattresses.

How much ceiling height do I need for a four poster bed?
We recommend a minimum ceiling height of 220cm (7ft 3in). Remember to account for ceiling lights, sloping ceilings and other overhead fittings when measuring your bedroom.
Can a four poster bed work in a smaller bedroom?
Four poster beds can work in smaller bedrooms when there is sufficient floor and ceiling space. Consider the complete frame dimensions and how the tall posts will sit alongside your existing bedroom furniture.
Can I add curtains to a wooden four poster bed?
Curtains can be draped over the upper frame of our four poster bed if you prefer a softer, more enclosed look. The frame can also be left completely open.
